Backlinks to rankings to revenue: why one link changes everything

The #1 Google result has 3.8x more backlinks than positions two to ten, and pages with no links are almost never found. Here is why a single high-authority backlink is the highest-leverage asset a new product can earn.

This study traces the mechanism that turns a single backlink into durable search traffic and, eventually, revenue.Backlinko’s analysis of 11.8 million search results found that the number of distinct websites linking to a page correlates with rankings more than almost any other factor, and that the top result has 3.8 times more backlinks than positions two through ten.[1] Pages with no links are effectively invisible. Below we show why one early, high-authority link is the highest-leverage asset a new product can acquire, and why a dofollow backlink is the quiet reason a launch keeps paying off.

Links are how Google decides what to trust

Search engines cannot read minds; they read links. A link from another site is a vote of confidence, and pages that collect more of those votes rank higher and get discovered faster. The correlation is not subtle. Across 11.8 million results, referring domains was the strongest single ranking signal Backlinko measured.[1]

Backlinks by Google ranking position
The #1 result carries 3.8 times more backlinks than the pages ranked #2 to #10. Relative scale, baseline set to positions #2 to #10.[1]

Even as Google’s ranking system grows more sophisticated, links still matter. When Ahrefs studied one million SERPs after Google publicly downplayed links, it still found a clear positive correlation between links and rankings.[3] The weight changed; the direction did not.

The cold-start problem for new products

A brand-new domain starts with zero links, which is precisely why it struggles. Ahrefs found that of roughly 20 million pages with no referring domains, only about 1 in 6,671 ever breaks 1,000 monthly visits.[2] Without that first vote of confidence, Google has little reason to crawl you often or rank you at all.

The first backlink is worth more than the tenth. It moves you from “undiscovered” to “on the map,” and it makes every later link compound faster.

Why a launch backlink is high-leverage

Not all links are equal. A link from a high-authority, topically relevant domain passes far more value than a random directory. A launch platform listing is a strong example: it sits on an established, trusted domain, it is topically about software and startups, and it points directly at your product.[4] That is exactly the kind of early link that helps a new page start ranking.

  • Dofollow matters. A dofollow link passes ranking signal; a nofollow link mostly passes referral traffic. For SEO value, you want dofollow.
  • Authority matters. One link from a trusted domain outweighs dozens from weak ones.
  • Relevance matters. A link from a software directory to your software carries topical context Google rewards.

What this means for how you launch

This is why Flamas does not sell the dofollow backlink. A link you can buy for the price of lunch is a paid link, and a paid link is supposed to carry a tag that strips out the ranking signal you were paying for. Worse, a directory that sells links at that price loses the authority that made its links worth having, and then every link it ever handed out is worth nothing, including yours.

So it is earned instead. Claim your listing by proving you control the domain, keep your site answering our checks for 30 days, and have a launch day behind you. Meet all four and the link becomes dofollow on its own, at no cost. Stop answering and it reverts the same day, because we do not pass authority to a product that is not there. The backlink is the part of a launch that keeps working long after the upvotes stop, which is the subject of the companion study on why a listing outlives its launch day.

Frequently asked questions

Do backlinks still matter for SEO in 2026?

Yes. Even after Google publicly downplayed links, Ahrefs analyzed one million SERPs and still found a clear positive correlation between links and rankings. Backlinko's 11.8M-result study found referring domains to be the strongest single ranking signal.

What is the difference between a dofollow and nofollow backlink?

A dofollow link passes ranking signal (link equity) to your page, which helps SEO. A nofollow link mainly sends referral traffic without directly passing that ranking signal. For SEO value you want dofollow links from authoritative, relevant sites.

Why is a launch platform backlink valuable?

It sits on an established, high-authority domain, it is topically relevant to software and startups, and it points directly at your product. That combination of authority and relevance is exactly what makes an early backlink help a new page start ranking.

Can I buy a dofollow backlink on Flamas?

No, and that is the point. A link bought with money is a paid link, which is supposed to carry a tag that removes the ranking signal, and a directory that sells links cheaply loses the authority that made its links worth having. On Flamas a dofollow link is earned: claim the listing by proving you control the domain, keep the site answering our checks for 30 days, and have a launch day behind you. It reverts to nofollow the day the site stops answering.
